Five Reasons Why Lily Evans Does Not Like Sirius Black (And Five Reasons Why She Does)

Five Reasons Why Lily Evans Does Not Like Sirius Black (And Five Reasons Why She Does) by Papered

Summary: Sirius Black is infuriating in a way only he can be. And maybe that’s why Lily Evans comes to like him. Romance, 3,374 Words.

Why You Should Care: Hey there, your resident Lily/Sirius shipper checks in with a rec. This fic tells the Lily/Sirius story in a original, almost funny, sweet and fitting way. You can see it happen: Papered is expert at giving just enough detail for us to envisage the scene. Denial!Lily is the best thing ever.

Why You Might Not Care: List fics should die. Even ones where the form is actually used pretty well, like this one. But read on.

Apology: This is late from yesterday. Laptop issues. Sorry for inconvenience!

    Fighting To Explain From In-Between

Fighting To Explain From In-Between by Inkvoices

Summary: Dennis wishes he was more like Colin, then maybe he wouldn’t be in this in-between place. Oneshot, 1,766 Words.

Why You Should Care: Colin and Dennis Creevey are rarely written about in this fandom, and it’s lovely to see a piece that considers their situation during the Second War. Dennis, in particular, is very interesting in this piece, and the limbo between the Muggle and wizarding worlds in which he finds himself is especially intriguing. This piece is sad, but ultimately has an ending which, while not exactly happy, is definitely hopeful. Great characterisation for two fairly obscure characters, excellent flow, and an all-over worthwhile read (as most of Inkvoices’ fic tends to be).

Why You Might Not Care: I wish I’d seen Dogma, because this was written for an Omniocular challenge in which a TV show or film is incorporated into a fic (Inkvoices chose Dogma), and I can’t really fully understand how this ties in with a film I haven’t seen. Those of you who have seen it are better equipped to judge what sort of job she did at the challenge; as Harry Potter fic alone, though, this is wonderful. No criticism.

    One For Sorrow

One For Sorrow by Lilith Morgana

Summary: Eileen sings to her baby in Azkaban. Oneshot, 5,504 Words.

Why You Should Care: This is my favorite sort of fic, you know; the kind that takes the mere mention of a character or a fact of someone’s past and uses it as the smallest keystone to create something new and incredibly rich that slides right up against canon. The writing is top-notch, and the character work herein is just phenomenal. Lilith Morgana creates a very thoughtful character study in Eileen Prince, and a likewise thoughtful family history for Snape.

Why You Might Not Care: Snape’s here, but only just. This is Eileen’s story, so if stories about bit characters make you yawn this probably isn’t for you. But it’s really very wonderful, and I wish you’d read it anyway.

    Eight Little Deaths

Eight Little Deaths by Ms Spell

Summary: “La petite Mort, the French say.” Drabbles, 521 Words.

Why You Should Care: Drabbles done the way drabbles are best; precisely short and wrapped from top to bottom in theme.  Ms Spell knows very well how to wield this weapon and she tells the story of Remus and Tonks from start to finish.

Why You Might Not Care: Very short drabbles ahead.  Also Remus/Tonks as a heads up for all you rabid Remus/Sirius shippers out there.

This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours

This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours by Hackthis

Summary: “There’s only one story in the entire world and everything else is a variation thereof, so the idea that Sirius fell through the veil and died is just one potential ending out of hundreds of thousands. Remus doesn’t like that particular ending, so he’s going to choose another one.” Drabbles, 883 Words.

Why You Should Care: For the Remus/Sirius lover, this is six little connected snippets of heartbreaking AU gold. It’s straightforward, presenting each alternate scenario honestly and without frills instead of breaking into developed stories. Each one left me wishing it had happened that way instead, and they’re just so perfect. I’m finding it quite difficult to be eloquent about these. Just read them, you won’t be sorry.

Why You Might Not Care: There’s a brief moment of explicitness, and this is quite obviously slash. If you scoff at Remus/Sirius, this isn’t the story (or rather, stories) for you. Also, you might wish they had been longer: each one has the potential for a full-blown tale behind them. However, they work quite well as they are.

    Rush

    Rush by Infinitesimal

Summary: He whispers, hot open mouthed kisses, and she tastes like cinnamon from her toast that morning and the butterbeer he had bought for her, ran all the way to Hogsmeade under his cloak and bought for her, just because she said she’d never tried one before. I want you to experience everything he’d told her, and she’d looked so innocent. Oneshot, 1,408 Words.

Why You Should Care: I know I recced Infinitesimal just the other day, but this fic is so noteworthy that I hope you’ll let it pass. This short and simple Lily/James piece is so richly emotive and carnally passionate that something within you stirs as you read it. At first glance it just feels like a pointless, mussed-haired moment, but the details about the emotions and facets of the characters give this piece light, shade and depth as the characters stand gingerly on the edge of the precipice.

Why You Might Not Care: Rated NC-17 and at times gets a little close to being a little PWP-ish, but mainly it’s character-driven, not porn-driven.

Draco Malfoy, Ruler of the Universe

Draco Malfoy, Ruler of the Universe by Mistful

Summary: “Draco tilted his head. At this angle, you could almost see Dumbledore’s will to live draining away.”  Draco Malfoy gets what’s coming to him. Parody, 8,865 Words.

Why You Should Care: Manically funny and delightfully backward.  The characters are pushed far enough that it’s wonderful parody, but not too far that it’s absurd.  Sure to delight readers of Trio-Era fiction the most, and Draco lovers and haters in equal parts.  He’s the star in this one… and Mistful goes to great lengths to make fun of that, too.

Why You Might Not Care: I suppose there might be one or two people out there who don’t like parody, which is really quite a shame.  Just think about all that wonderful laughter those people are missing out on!

    HP Drabbles (Het)

    HP Drabbles (Het) by Celandine

Summary: Drabbles (100-words-exactly ficlets) include a variety of het pairings in the HP-verse. Drabbles, 1,400 Words.

Why You Should Care: Sweetly romantic and at times bitterly chill, Celandine has a knack of creating the moment. The reader is given no more than a snapshot, no more than a glimpse, but the author knows exactly how much, but just enough, is required to allow the story to weave in one’s imagination.

Why You Might Not Care: This piece has the worst title in the history of Harry Potter fanfiction. Some of the pairings aren’t really my thing. But I like the style and so should you.

    Valedictory

    Valedictory by Thirty2Flavors

Summary: It is the night before the Fidelius Charm is performed, and Lily cannot shake the feeling that this will be the last time she ever sees Sirius Black. Oneshot, 2,091 Words.

Why You Should Care: This piece broke my heart when I first read it. You might think, alright, the last time James and Lily will ever see Sirius — okay, not that original, moving on. But no, Thirty2Flavors dives right in and presents the scene with such raw emotion that I can guarantee that you have never seen it like this before. I rarely cry at fanfiction, but tears were streaming down my face by the end of this one. Lovely, and heartbreaking, and so real. Thirty2Flavors, once again, has set my personal canon.

Why You Might Not Care: Sharp, piercing angst. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Also, like I said, you might have already imagined or read about this scene — but really, it’s so worth reading, even if you think you’ve seen it all before. (Maybe you’re tired of reading Thirty2Flavor’s fics, too, but I have no sympathy for you there, because you’d have to be mad not to love her work.)

    Tea Time

    Tea Time by NovemberSnow

Summary: “Never knew werewolves were such fiends for tea.” Drabble Collection, 10 x 100 Words.

Why You Should Care: Ten beautifully interconnected 100 word drabbles about Remus, done just the way I like ’em: perfectly. The thread that strings these moments together is thin but strong, and while each of these drabbles could stand along perfectly well, together they are even better. Fine work from a fine fic author.

Why You Might Not Care: Remus/Sirius ahoy, mates. All G-rated, mind, but definitely there nonetheless.

    Reflections

    Reflections by Quizzical

Summary: “She looked back to the mirror. Arthur’s long limbs entwined around her soft round body. It wasn’t the image that people would think of as ‘sexy’ but she thought they were beautiful.” Oneshot, 3,041 Words.

Why You Should Care: This is a delicious peek into the quiet, middle-aged love of Arthur and Molly Weasley, as well as an encouraging story about the softer, forever sort of love the right marriage can create.  It’s touching and sweet and reflective and well-aged, just like Arthur and Molly.

Why You Might Not Care: I suppose this is rated NC-17, and for anyone who squicks at the notion of Trio-Era Arthur/Molly sex, this probably won’t work for you.  The sex is in the same vein as the subtext of the story, and it is a touch romanticised, which usually makes me laugh and roll my eyes, but in this story with this couple from Molly’s point-of-view, it works pretty well.

    Bar Maid

    Bar Maid by Snegurochka Lee

Summary: Five conversations at a bar. Five women who didn’t take the bar maid’s advice. Five lives Rosmerta never changed. Oneshot, 7,195 Words.

Why You Should Care: Because Snegurochka Lee wins at genfic. Rosmerta, a secondary character, is completely fleshed out as a strong and dimensional and edgy woman, weathered by time and the difficulties of her world. Some of the main characters from canon are shown waltzing in and out of the background for a change, which is interesting to see; it’s an excellent selection of cast, and you’ve got to love the way Rosmerta relates to each of them. This portrait of Rosmerta and her place in society comes across splendidly. My general reaction at the end was “Rosmerta kicks ass,” and I would consider that a job well done in a character piece. Additionally, as in Five Woman Who Hate Fleur Delacour, Snegurochka Lee’s genfic has another message lurking beneath, and this time, it’s about the people you might see all around you if you dared to take a second look. Absolutely wonderful.

Why You Might Not Care: Perhaps you’re not into genfic or secondary characters — but really, this is brilliant, from one of the best authors of character pieces I’ve seen in this fandom. If you don’t read it, you’re missing out.

    Myriad

    Myriad by Infinitesimal

Summary: To fall, to fly, to sleep, to dream, to die. Drabble, 898 Words.

Why You Should Care: I love Lily. I love happy!Lily and pregnant!Lily and James’!Lily. But most of all I love crazy!Lily. Half-minded, edge-of-a-precipice, somewhere between here and insanity Lily. This fic, with its so-tangible imagery and its so-relatable narrative, is the perfect example of this Lily I love. The depiction of grief and self-deception in this fic is heartbreaking and honest. You laugh and you cry reading this fic and damnit, it’s less than 900 words.

Why You Might Not Care: Very brief and gratuitous angst/purple prose. But you love it really.

    That Other Fellow

    That Other Fellow by Sciathan_File

Summary: “Moreover, now every time he so much as saw that portrait move an eyebrow, he thought it only presaged some new doom.” Oneshot, 3,532 Words.

Why You Should Care: Not that anyone really needs a reason to read something by Sciathan File except that it was written by Sciathan File, but if you insist…. It’s a stunningly good fic on the minor-est of minor characters, the nameless Other Minister, highlighting his, and by extension the rest of the Muggle world’s, experience in the war they know nothing about. This is one of those stories where I feel JKR’s intent seeping in through every word, and in places Sciathan File echos her style perfectly, too.

Why You Might Not Care: This tune is played through the eyes of the Muggle Prime Minister, whose HP fan club consists of a motley-looking elderly gentleman eating crisps and wearing a lapel pin. But take heart– gen-ficcers will love this, too.

    Letters from the Exile

Letters from the Exile by MsSpell

Summary: The correspondence surreptitiously exchanged between Tonks and Lupin with the help of the Order members, during the year he worked as a spy among the werewolves. Oneshot, 3,017 Words.

Why You Should Care: I hate Remus/Tonks. For no real reason. But I love this fic. It’s perfect; romantic, honest and fresh. The characterisation is startlingly good: none of the letters in this epistolary fic are signed, and yet there is no difficulty in distiguishing character — both Remus and Tonks have such strong styles and characters. Remus’ cutting nature makes this a little sad, while Tonks’ bluntness makes it a little bit funny and, frankly, it feels like how Remus/Tonks may have actually happened, as opposed to the disjointedness that is canon. The awkward end scene is suitably cute and then entire sense is far less forced than canon. A rare gem.

Why You Might Not Care: Sometimes Tonks is irritating. Like, very. And this fic feels a litte rambling in places. But nothing so bad as to deter one from reading.

    Along The Way

Along The Way by Elizabeth Culmer

Summary: Idealism is hard to balance against the rest of life. Oneshot, 6,000 Words.

Why You Should Care: Many times, it is difficult to write the Trio as adults; in this piece, I felt Hermione growing up, and it was beautifully done. This is a realistic story that follows her on her journey, not only to adulthood, but through it. I’m not personally the most interested person in the Trio as opposed to other characters, but this captivated me; I felt that the characters in this piece, most of all Hermione, were kept true to themselves while aging just right. The story felt honest (which is an achievement, considering the universe we’re playing in), and the end gives the most excellent feeling.

Why You Might Not Care: As the author warns, post-DH interviews are disregarded, and this may bother the greatest of canon-sticklers. Also, you may not really care about the trio, at all. Otherwise, this is wonderful, and you should definitely give it a read.

    A Ribbon of Black

A Ribbon of Black by _YourGoodbyes

Summary:Silly girl, she thinks, an utterly incomplete thought.” Oneshot, 2,547 Words.

Why You Should Care: This fic makes me sigh.  At its heart it’s a series of drabbles tied together as a series of memories in a time of profound loss for one, Andromeda Tonks, and by now we all know how much I love well-done drabbles, so this rec should come as no surprise.  This also gives a slightly different version of the Andromeda/Ted situation at the end of their final school year that I have not read before and had never thought of before, but now that I have I’m quite completely in love with the idea.

Why You Might Not Care: Nitpickers should know that Dolohov’s age might not fit with canon, but that’s only for those hardcore nitpickers (you know who you are).  Other than that, if you like nearly-poetic stories, drabbles, or fics about Andromeda (you know who you are, too), then you’ll like this for sure.

Once Upon a Time, In Winter

Once Upon a Time, In Winter by CatFoxBird

Summary: He had to see her, just once more. Oneshot, 1,923 Words.

Why You Should Care: I’m not really sure, actually, except that there’s something about it I quite like.  Maybe it’s the mixing of unrequited romance and creepiness that suits Snape’s character, and how — for a little while — his motives and plans for that night are seriously in question, and it feels like the story might move into darkfic territory in a hurry.  Wonderful tension that breaks on the lighter side.

Why You Might Not Care: I probably would have liked this fic even more if it had moved into darkfic territory, because there is serious potential to dive head-first into some obviously dark themes.  It would have been a different story, though.  And probably a different character.

    The Hours

    The Hours by Virginia_Bell

Summary: It all weighs upon her like the gold of her locket upon her neck and the gold is like twisted iron. She has tried before but she cannot take it off. Oneshot, 1,078 Words.

Why You Should Care: When I read this, first time, I believe that my mouth was hanging open. This is so good. It’s beautiful, almost like poetry, and yet hints at such darkness and pain. It’s frightening and morbid and I can’t stop re-reading it. The formatting only makes me love it more — in the words of a reviewer, ‘the fractured style reflects her fractured thoughts’. So worth your read.

Why You Might Not Care: This is about the life of Merope Gaunt, before she reached out and tried to take her fate into her own hands; some might not care. It’s dark and hints at incest; some might not like. Also, it’s quite stylistic, which irks some people but only makes me like the piece more.

Seven Things That Didn’t Happen On Valentine’s Day At Hogwarts, Or Maybe They Did

Seven Things That Didn’t Happen On Valentine’s Day At Hogwarts, Or Maybe They Did by Pru

Summary: “At seven thirty-six AM on February fourteenth, the giant squid climbed out of the Hogwarts lake, dragged itself in front of a nondescript part of the castle, and began to sing “Daisy”. Before the encore performance and right after a glorious vibrato finale, the squid dedicated the song to Severus Snape, who had appeared at one of the nondescript windows at twenty minutes ’till eight.” Valentine’s Day over seven years at Hogwarts. Humour/Romance, 25,256 Words.

Why You Should Care: This is so funny — and so Marauder. Of course they would have prank wars on Valentine’s Day. As ridiculous as it gets — trust me, the summary is only the start of things — you never stop believing that it could have happened. It’s equal parts romance and humour, with just a little bit of angst towards the end to keep the saccharine from becoming overwhelming. A perfect fic for today.

Why You Might Not Care: Some of the formatting is a bit off, but that’s a minor irritation. One of the seven sections runs quite longer than the rest, but it never stops being amusing. Also, this is quite decidedly Remus/Sirius, and though about half of the fic focuses on the actions of all four Marauders, the ship does take over at the end. If you’re not interested, don’t read it, but I highly recommend that you do; I love this fic.
