    Between the Lines

Between the Lines by Lady Altair

Summary: There are many tales to be told between the golden threads of the Black Family tree. Oneshot, 1,024 Words.

Why You Should Care: I love it when a clever author takes the thinnest, flimsiest of threads from some sideboarded piece of the Harry Potter universe and weaves it expertly into the broader tapestry, tucking it in here, tying it in there, and making it feel so obvious, like it couldn’t possibly have gone any other way. What was probably an unintentional gaff of math on JKR’s side is turned into an incredibly poignant story.

Why You Might Not Care: Um…? Lady Altair pretty much always deserves a read. This one looks like it’s going to be a larger collection of oneshot stories; I anticipate all of them will be of similar stellar quality.

Minerva McGonagall and the Insurance Salesman

Minerva McGonagall and the Insurance Salesman by Emiime

Summary: “The hapless insurance salesman squirmed. ‘If you will recall, Professor McGonagall, last time we spoke I told you we wished to cancel your policy. The amount of issues the school has — it’s simply too high-risk for us….’ ” Oneshot, 1,218 Words.

Why You Should Care: Because it’s an absolutely smashing idea for a fic that mixes the magical and the ordinary in ways that make me cackle. I adore the original character of Brian Hemmings, who bit off much more than he could chew. A bit of a stab at the insurance industry. Delightfully amusing.

Why You Might Not Care: It says part one of two, and the second part hasn’t made it up yet. It stands well enough on its own, though.

    The Final Stage

The Final Stage by Another Dreamer

Summary: 12 Grimmauld Place is nobody’s idea of the perfect place for a party. Yet that is where Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Nymphadora Tonks find themselves spending the fourteenth anniversary of Voldemort’s defeat. Overwhelmed by memories of that Halloween night, the three just want to drink brandy and forget. Oneshot, 4,727 Words.

Why You Should Care: This is one of those lovely little plotless character genfics that I always gravitate toward, the value of which lies in what is said (and sometimes what is not said) rather than what is done.  Just as Sirius and Remus are trying very hard not to think about it, this story dances around the edges of what it’s trying to say, and also just like Remus and Sirius sometimes can’t help but think about it, so this story sinks just deep enough into its subject matter to make it seriously worthwhile.

Why You Might Not Care: Low on the action-packed, high on the subtle character sketch.

    Seven Photographs

    Seven Photographs by Casira

Summary: Glimpses of our heroes at the end of the battles and beyond, as they face what’s lost and what’s to come. Oneshot, 8,300 Words.

    Guest Rec’d By: Kira

Why You Should Care: Written shortly after the release of DH, casira writes seven separate scenes that, frankly, JKR should have written, and succeeds just as if Jo had written it herself. There’s Remus and Tonks’ death; Minerva and Hogwarts directly after the battle; Hermione’s parents in Australia; George returning to WWW’s alone for the first time; Kingsley and the rebuilding of the MoM via Potterwatch; Ginny, Neville, Luna, and Andromeda discussing post-war plans; and finally, Harry visiting Snape’s grave. In a style very reminiscent of Jo’s, casira really wraps the HP series up well with a touch of everything that made it successful in the first place: brilliant character interaction, gripping action, laughter, family, and sacrifice. A brilliant pre-epilogue.

Why You Might Not Care: If you didn’t like the way DH ended at all, then this may not be your cup of tea.

    An Undying Passion for Cupcakes

An Undying Passion for Cupcakes by Ignipes

Summary: “That morning, when they were finishing breakfast, she had been very insistent: ‘I’m going to make them the Muggle way… That’s the proper way to make these cupcakes.’ ” Oneshot, 4,622.

Why You Should Care: In places it’s quite funny, and in others it’s just so well written I can’t help but rec it. It’s AU, taking place in a post-Voldemort world where Sirius didn’t die (or at least, didn’t stay dead), and there’s been some attempt to create an after the war that reflects some of the same price as the one JKR created. Hermione’s story, particularly, is rather touching despite being “frosted” with humour. In the end, though, I rather think this is mostly fluffy.

Why You Might Not Care: I think it suffers from trying to do too much with too few words. Either it’s a moderately fluffy piece of AU post-war or it’s an in depth AU treatment of another version of events. In the end, this fic tries to be both, and ends up not really being either. The AU world hinted here is fascinating and would fill several chapters of several novel-length fics well, but the gaps that inform the characters written are too big to get much out of this story (aside from a moderate understanding of Hermione’s journey) but fluff. There hasn’t been a clear enough picture painted of the path taken that resulted in this AU endpoint.

Variations on a Happily Ever After

Variations on a Happily Ever After by GM Weasley

Summary: All was eventually well, but it took nineteen years to get there. Drabble Collection, 7,400.

Why You Should Care: This is a wonderful series of drabbles centered around the women of the Harry Potter universe and life beyond the epilogue. Insightful, thoughtful, and occasionally even mundane, these little snatches of the painfully ordinary process of moving on after the end of the story are well worth your time. Angelina’s thoughts on her wedding are particularly well done.

Why You Might Not Care: These drabbles could have been tighter, and occasionally they suffer from awkward syntax. A couple of passes from a sharp-eyed beta would have alleviated this problem.

    The Willingness to Be Duplicitous

The Willingness to Be Duplicitous by R Grayjoy

Note: This link currently points to a locked post in the Friends Only community Erotic Elves.   If anyone knows of an unlocked copy of this fic, please let me know so I can change the link.  It is against C&C policy to link to locked posts, and this was done so in error.

Summary: Those who practice duplicity always suspect it in others. Oneshot, 1,200.

Why You Should Care: This is a spin on the Founders and their breaking that I have never read before — one that intrigues me and starts to poke into my own personal canon and seed. This Rowena is as interesting a character as Salazar, if not more so, and I long to know more about the how and the why of this story.

Why You Might Not Care: The reveal has been shrouded by a flash het sex fic that is somewhat explicit and probably NWS, but it’s all over pretty quickly, and my monitor didn’t steam over once. Not the best NC17 scene ever written by any stretch of the imagination, but since it’s not really the point (and indeed might have even distracted) it can be excused.

    Only In Ravenclaw

    Only in Ravenclaw by Apostrophet

Summary: Friendships and fun in the Ravenclaw common room. Oneshot, 1,381.

Why You Should Care: A fluffy little gen feature on what it might be like in the Ravenclaw common room.  Practically purposeless, but kind of neat nonetheless.  I especially love the idea of Luna deep in conversation about sex with a portrait of Yoda.  These Ravenclaws seem both similar and different than the other houses we’ve seen, which — I think — is exactly right.

Why You Might Not Care: Pointless, other than to shed some light on the general common room feel of being a Ravenclaw.  Technically also Cho/Roger, but it’s by no means the centre of the fic.

    Tumble

    Tumble by FireworkFiasco

Summary: “There isn’t time to dream, to pretend, so she busies herself with plotting and planning and doesn’t think about caresses by the lake or how green his eyes really were.” Oneshot, 1,340.

Why You Should Care: I’m not generally fond of Ginny-centric fics, and I think it’s because I find her character as created by Jo somewhat elusive — you think you’ve got her nailed, only to read it over and find out no, no that’s not quite right.  I can’t say that this fic will suit everyone’s vision of Ginny, but it suits mine quite nicely; what’s more, it’s been carefully and deliberately designed in four verses, each with its own theme, and the entire four part oneshot stretches itself across the expanse of Ginny’s character in Deathly Hallows.  Her transformation from child to adult is as borderless as the changing of the seasons.

Why You Might Not Care: For whatever reason, there are some people who so detest Ginny as a character overall that they probably wouldn’t enjoy anything that featured her.

Weasleys Wizard Wheezes: The Ministry Disapproved Edition (The Liability Remix)

Weasleys Wizard Wheezes: The Ministry Disapproved Edition (The Liability Remix) by SullenSiren (Original by Xylodemon)

Summary: From the desk of Percival Ignatius Weasley, concerning the twins’ latest product line. Oneshot, 3,000.

Why You Should Care: Originally written in 2006 for the Omniocular Non-Fiction Challenge, and recently remixed for Remix Redux 2006. The original was absolute fun, and the new additions in the voice of Percy compliment the original content wonderfully. Catalogue comes complete with images, pricing, order form, and sparling text! Really fantastic multi-media comedic exercise that fits well in JKR’s universe.

Why You Might Not Care: The original was written before DH, and the remix — even though it was written post DH — has complied with that original, so suspend your canon complaints.

    The Measure of a Man

The Measure of a Man by Gilpin25

Summary: “I’m sixteen years old and I’m in love with a girl who thinks I’m an arrogant, bullying toerag, and I don’t know how to change her mind as everything I do just makes it worse.” James Potter, who usually has all the answers, has none for this… Oneshot, 7,690.

Why You Should Care: One of the most frustrating parts of DH for MWPP era writers was the order in which JKR presented the memories in Snape’s pensieve, suggesting in her cannon that Snape’s Worst Memory happened sometime after the Prank, which has made it difficult to track James’ character from childish, bullying tormentor to Head Boy material. This is the first fic I’ve read that addresses these events as in the order suggested by JKR and doesn’t use the Prank as the linchpin pulled in the growing up of James Potter, and it does an admiral job of tying those loose ends together into one cohesive whole. Creative, original, and very well characterised and executed on all fronts.

Why You Might Not Care: Tired of Marauder fic yet? Boy are you at the wrong recs site…. 😉

    Patron to the Stars

Patron to the Stars by AtDelphi

Summary: The talent of Horace Slughorn. 100 Word Drabble.

Why You Should Care: It’s a neat little 100 word drabble, which always make me giddy, and it’s about a minor character largely ignored by fandom.  It really says quite a lot about Slughorn in so very few words.

Why You Might Not Care: Drabbles aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, I suppose.

    Paper Love

    Paper Love by Lady Altair

Summary: Gideon Prewett learns to let go. Drabble, 962 Words.

Why You Should Care: Beautiful and deceptively simplistic, Lady Altair sets us up with sweet, hopeful innocence, then sweeps it away under the harsh reality of war and what it does to people.  The use of the letter in metaphor is wonderfully used.

Why You Might Not Care: Sad ending…?  Somehow I doubt that’s reason enough to stop anyone, though if you’re in the mood for fluff you should probably save this for another time.

    The Thestral Nursery Rhyme

The Thestral Nursery Rhyme by MelusinaHP

Summary: Uh. I think the title is pretty self explanatory. Poetry, 270 Words.

    Guest Rec’d By: Kali (thirty2flavors)

Why You Should Care: It’s awesome: it captures the flippant tone of a nursery rhyme perfectly while remaining just as slightly unsettling as classic fairy-tales and nursery rhymes. I always think it’s neat to see this sort of thing, something that fits wholly into Rowling’s world without needing to be tied to any particular character.

Why You Might Not Care: It is mostly disconnected from any particular character, and it is rather dark humour.

    Weakness

    Weakness by Alyx Bradford

Summary: “This cannot possibly end well.” Oneshot, 6,761 Words.

Why You Should Care: This is a great little oneshot fiction about the coming together of the Founders that also lays the breadcrumbs of the inevitable clash between Godric and Salazar.  The characters are wonderfully three-dimensional (well… you don’t really get much out of Helga’s cameo to be fair) and the thematic elements of this fic are tied right into the centre of it.  In addition, the writing is mindful of the era this is set in, and the dialogue fits this period piece quite nicely.

Why You Might Not Care: It doesn’t win a million points for having an original premis (the Salazar/Rowena/Godric triangle has been done plenty of times before, and I can’t help but wonder why it’s always Rowena in the centre of it — anyone got a Salazar/Helga/Godric fic laying around somewhere?) but the execution is nearly flawless.  Also, warnings for NC17 and NWS material, folks.

    The Perfect Glasses

    The Perfect Glasses by Emiime

Summary: Percy needs glasses. Luckily he’s found the perfect pair. Oneshot, 1,132 Words.

Why You Should Care: This piece is so adorable and sad. Percy is on his way to becoming the canon character we’re familiar with, yet here, he’s still a little boy who shouldn’t have to deal with being poor. I can see this happening, and it broke my heart a little to read it. On the surface, it seems like a simple story, but the image of what the Weasleys have to go through — all the time — just hurts.

Why You Might Not Care: Sympathetic Percy, or even the Weasleys in general, may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s alright. However, this is a short, bittersweet piece that is well worth the read.

    Platform Nine and Five-Sixteenths

Platform Nine and Five-Sixteenths by MTFierce

Summary: “Exceptionally Brilliant” Oneshot, 1,800 Words.

Why You Should Care: An “Exceptionally Brilliant”, “Rather Creative” character piece on Luna that occasionally “Needs Direction”.  For people who never quite understood why Luna is in Ravenclaw, I think you’ll find quite some of that answer here.  I love the shifting focus of this piece, the way it free-flow follows thoughts and threads until they connect with other interesting ideas.  The form of this is very true to Luna’s character, I think, and I particularly enjoyed Luna’s thoughts on language and the importance of using the right word to capture the right idea.  This fic wanders and meanders, but in a wonderful Luna-type way.

Why You Might Not Care: This fic wanders and meanders.  The punctuation and sentence composition is sometimes needlessly excessive and occasionally confusing.  Despite containing a lot of variation, the use of sentences that are either unusually choppy or complex inhibits the flow of this piece and sometimes feels distinctly un-Luna.  It also contains not-quite subtle hints of Neville/Ginny and Harry/Luna.

    All Those Empty Spaces

All Those Empty Spaces by JackieJLH

Summary: She never noticed all the empty spaces in her life until they started to fill up with memories. Oneshot, 2,202 Words.

Why You Should Care: This is an absolutely fantastic character piece on Petunia that sketches her character as well as her thoughts on many other characters, which is often just as revealing.  The language is just completely amazing, and the whole thing reads like a drabble in the way that every word has been carefully crafted to fit with all the other words — nothing is out of place or extraneous.  Petunia is in a place where there is nothing for her to do but think, and while her thoughts stray far and wide there is a thematic cohesion to them that makes me sigh.

Why You Might Not Care: I often run out of witty things to say here when I have nothing of value to say here.  I was tempted to just leave it blank….

    When September Comes Again

When September Comes Again by AuntBijou

Summary: Life comes full circle for everyone, even Muggles.  Oneshot, 1,222 Words.

Why You Should Care: These sorts of genfics are always fantastic.  It includes exactly zero canon characters, yet is completely canon, and it just warms your heart right up.  Original characters and ideas written like this are why I love fanfiction as much as I do.  It’s lovely to see that someone else thinks about those Muggles that live their lives so close to the magical world that they must be at least a little aware of it, even though they’ll never be a part of it.

Why You Might Not Care: I can’t think of a single reason.

    As Before

    As Before by Atrata

Summary: “That’s the worst, I think.  When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller, but for want of an understanding ear.” Drabble, 635 Words.

Why You Should Care: Written sometime between the release of Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows, this piece reflects one of so many possible outcomes of the complex relationship between Snape and Harry, had the chips of plot fallen differently.  There’s a lot of room for interpretation in these six hundred words, which makes it all the more interesting — especially when we apply what we know from Deathly Hallows about what motivated Snape.

Why You Might Not Care: In the words of the author, it could be Snape/Harry if you squint (you really have to want it, though).  Otherwise, it’s fairly clear-cut gen.
