    Naked Quidditch Match

    Naked Quidditch Match by Anya

Summary: Exactly what the title implies. Comedy/Parody (obviously), 19,927 Words.

Why You Should Care: This is gloriously funny. One of those comedic gems that only gets funnier as you keep reading. The characters start out and almost remain entirely in character and yet somehow manage to be completely un-canon hilarious at the same time. This, my friends, is all about the situational comedy and what it can do to perfectly normal people. It’s written almost entirely in e-mail like correspondence between the characters, and all the regulars (and some of the not-so-regulars) make appearances. Oh goodness, this is funny.

Why You Might Not Care: There is absolutely no reason for you not to care, it’s that funny.

Awards: Round Three Multifaceted Awards – Humour; 2008 Hourglass Award, Admins’ Choice — Comedy.

    To Live Nobly

    To Live Nobly by Vea

Summary: It doesn’t feel like he’s living. In a world ruled by the Dark Lord, he’s miserable, but not because of the government. A chance meeting wakes him up, but there’s something familiar about her that he can’t quite put his finger on… AU, Oneshot, 6,394 Words.

Why You Should Care: This is a really fantastic bit of writing and a brilliant AU fic. I don’t want to say too much about it because it’s really much better if you discover what’s happening as you read it, but suffice it to say that it’s heart-breaking. Everything about it is just excellent in that pitch-perfect sad kind of way.

Why You Might Not Care: If you don’t like reading something that plunks you into the middle with no information and slowly offers you tidbits as you discover what is happening and what has gone on, then don’t go here. But you really should, it’s so very good.

Sublimation and the Snitch, by Remus J. Lupin

Sublimation and the Snitch, by Remus J. Lupin by SamVimes

Summary: Remus Lupin wrote an essay about Quidditch and sex in his seventh year. Are you brave enough to read it? You’ll never see the Snitch the same way again… Humor, 4,726 Words.

Why You Should Care: An essay, as written on the above topic by Remus. It’s a wonderfully amusing little exercise.

Why You Might Not Care: Well… to be honest, if you start to fall asleep reading an essay, you might not find the funny here. It’s a little geared towards an audience that knows the process and format of writing papers – not high school essays, but collage-style papers. The brilliance in this lies in that somewhere, someone has written an actual academic paper on this very topic – I guarantee it.

    Twice As Bright

    Twice As Bright by Thirty2Flavors

Summary: She introduced him as James Potter, he shook your hand, and you knew, instantly, that she’d outdone you again. // Petunia reflects on the differences between the Dursleys and the Potters. Oneshot, 1,243 Words.

Why You Should Care: Character pieces on Petunia Dursley – especially ones that focus on her thoughts about the Potters – are few and far between, but this is a must read for everyone. It’s just as much about the Potters as it is the Dursleys, as seen through Petunia’s shrewd lens. Excellent!

Why You Might Not Care: Even if Petunia isn’t your thing, read it anyway. Even if the Potters aren’t your thing, read it anyway. This is what quality writing is, people. I suppose if you’re one of those jaded readers that only reads fluff or slash or smut or something, but even then… read it anyway.

Awards: 2007 Hourglass Award, Oneshot – First Place.

    A Keen Observer

    A Keen Observer by DeepDownSlytherin

Summary: Andromeda says little, but she sees everything. Through their years at Hogwarts, she watches her sisters as one falls in love and one falls into madness, and doesn’t see as a Muggleborn boy breaks into her sheltered life. Novel Length, 145,600 Words, Complete.

Why You Should Care: A brilliantly told story of the Black sisters – and to some extent the Black brothers – from the summer before the first of them goes to Hogwarts until the very end of Andromeda’s seventh year. It is so difficult to trace these characters backward through time – most especially Bellatrix – but this is how it must have been. This fic just pulls you right in, and you quickly forget that nearly every major character in this piece turns into a villain. The growing respect and romance between Andromeda and Ted is paced perfectly, and never takes away from the main themes. This family is given real depth, and their journeys are compelling.

Why You Might Not Care: If you really don’t like stories that focus on the villains, or on the Black family in particular, this story isn’t for you. Also, this was written prior to the release of the Black Family Tree, so the ages of the girls are no longer canon. In my opinion (and I worship canon, remember) it’s worth over-looking. A warning that this fiction is long; over 145,000 words. It is, however, complete, so there is no fear of the potential that you might never get the payoff. Expect this one to take you at least several days – if you can put it down, that is.

Awards: 2007 Hourglass Award, Romance – Second Place.
