    Last Brother’s Valediction

    Last Brother’s Valediction by DMP

Summary: Lupin contemplates death and tries to rationalise it the only way he can. Oneshot, 1,551 Words.

Why You Should Care: There are lots and lots and lots of “Remus reflects after Sirius dies” fics out there.  Quite a few of them are bad — terribly cliche, carbon copies of each other — and lots are all right.  There are a few that are outstanding, and DMP gives the issue a slightly different slant which, I think, has made all the difference.  Here she highlights a fundamental distinction between Remus and Sirius and the way they deal (or do not deal) with their own emotional weight, and Remus’ reflections circle this theme.  The letter exchange between he and Harry is appropriately strained — both of them are floundering in an unwelcome storm of criss-crossing emotions, and neither of them is capable of sharing the weight with someone else.  This fic has one of my most favorite closing lines ever, by the way, and it will hold a high place in my heart for that feat alone.

Why You Might Not Care: This is not slash.  I feel it’s important to point this out, because I would wager that a good 75% of the fics that fall into the “Remus reflects after Sirius dies” category do end up being slash in some form or another.  The fact that this one is decidedly not is probably one of the reasons I love it so much.  It’s not quite angst, either; it’s almost Remus reflecting on angst.  Sort of.

Hey. I’m not sure if this ‘submit comment’ thing works, or how it works, and this is the first time I’ve tried it. So here I go. I didn’t really feel that this fic was up to the standard of the others you’ve given. When I read it, it seemed a bit out of character. The ideas were good, but the writing, not so much.

Er, and I think this is a great site you have up. =] Keep it going!

      Signed simply, Yuan

The line ‘Promises are only as strong as the people who give them after all.’ made the fic a worthwhile read for me, personally. If canon Remus’ thoughts could be poured into a beaker and observed, I suspect we’d see many similar lines.

      Thanks for the recs!

I totally love it when people disagree with me! *hugs Yuan*

I think the writing is quite good, actually, but to each their own. It’s certainly stylized, but I admit to being an admirer of stylized pieces, and they don’t always float everyone’s boat.

There are some *excellent* turns of phrase in this piece — Tassee’s favorite is just one of the many, and I also confess to being a bit of a quote hoarder as well. A piece I may have otherwise overlooked (though I’m not sure this is one of them) I might instantly fall in love with because the author uses language to great effect. I think this has both, though, and it is an all-round good piece.

Thanks for the opinions, and the kudos! Keep ’em coming.
